SK Broadband implements 40G optical solution from LG-Nortel

Monday, Nov 17, 2008

South Korean broadband provider SK Broadband has increased its network capacity with a 40G optical solution from LG-Nortel, a joint venture between LG Electronics, an electronics products manufacturer, and Nortel (TSX:NT) (NYSE:NT), a network technology company, that will help it meet increasing demand for high-bandwidth services including IPTV and HD video conferencing. According to the company, LG-Nortels 40G optical technology has provided a cost-optimised solution without installing additional cable, enabling the provider to quadruple the capacity of its current 10G network by swapping its existing fibre-optic interface cards with new cards.

The upgrade has increased SK Broadbands maximum capacity without affecting the stability and configuration of its existing network. In addition, LG-Nortels 40G/100G Adaptive Optical Engine technology provides the company with a simple upgrade path for increasing capacity a further 2.5 times in the future.

SK Broadband now has 3.52Tb/s of bandwidth (88x40G wavelengths) using 40G/100G Adaptive Optical Engine, a plug-and-play solution that is deployable over any fibre-optic network and offers non-regenerated reach greater than 2000km.
